Cooperation agreement between Deutsche Telekom Stiftung and the city of Bonn for STEM education

Development of the STEM region – Deutsche Telekom Stiftung contributes EUR 550,000 – promotion of science, technology, engineering and mathematics

Deutsche Telekom Stiftung and the city of Bonn are joining forces and will work together even more closely in future to improve STEM education, i.e. education in the subjects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The objective is to develop the STEM region Bonn. To this end a cooperation agreement was signed in the mathematics center for schools in Bonn (MathZe).

In this cooperation the partners attach particular importance to improving STEM education for children and young people from difficult backgrounds. Mayor Ashok Sridharan looks forward to the cooperation: "STEM education is now a more important task than ever that must become an integral part of the educational biography of children and young people. And I am very pleased that Deutsche Telekom Stiftung together with the school authorities and administration is actively developing concepts for transferring the MathZe model to other subject areas in STEM education. I look forward finding out about the ideas developed".

The MathZe is an extra-curricular place of learning in the city that offers elementary schools in the Bonn region exciting insights into the world of mathematics. It was founded in 2013 with the support of Deutsche Telekom Stiftung and since then it has conveyed basic mathematical knowledge to students and teachers in themed rooms. Since its foundation around 8,000 children and more than 600 teachers have used the MathZe.

Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Schuster, Chairman of the Executive Board of Deutsche Telekom Stiftung, says: "We have a long relationship based on trust with the city of Bonn and this cooperation agreement is a further highlight. We are very pleased about this partnership which is the basis for better coordination of the STEM offerings available in the region, making them even more visible and accessible to as many children and young people as possible."

Under the umbrella of its program "Creating Opportunities@Bonn", Deutsche Telekom Stiftung is bringing measures and resources with a total volume of EUR 550,000 into the cooperation. To date the Stiftung has invested around EUR 1.9 million in STEM projects in Bonn.
